People who died in 2016: Muhammad Ali, Antonin Scalia and other deaths that made headlines

From politicians to celebrities and more, the world lost many wonderful -- and controversial -- people in 2016.

The year started off with the deaths of legendary musician David Bowie and beloved actor Alan Rickman, of "Harry Potter" and "Die Hard" fame.
Supreme Court Antonin Scalia left a sudden vacancy on the highest court in the land when he unexpectedly died in his sleep at a ranch in Texas in February. Former first lady Nancy Reagan passed away a few weeks later of congestive heart failure at the age of 94.
Pulitzer Prize-winning author Harper Lee, who wrote the classic "To Kill a Mockingbird," and Pat Conroy, who penned "The Great Santini" and "Prince of Tides," passed away in the early months of 2016 too.

Cuban dictator Fidel Castro's death sparked wildly different reactions in different parts of the world in December.
The loss of Muhammad Ali in June stunned millions around the world. Sports fans also grieved the loss of record-setting basketball coach Pat Summit who passed away in June and golfing legend Arnold Palmer who passed on in September.
Journalists mourned the passing of Morley Safer of "60 Minutes" fame in May and PBS NewsHour's Gwen Ifill in November.
But not every person whose death made headlines was a household name before they passed -- especially those who were taken unexpectedly in violent acts.
Dozens of souls were lost on June 12 when Omar Mateen gunned down more than 100 victims at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, taking 49 lives and wounding 53 others. The massacre was the single deadliest terror attack on American soil since September 11.
