Wal-Mart Grocery Store to Open Next Month

Wal-Mart Grocery Store to Open Next MonthDOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES - The grocery options continue to grow in Downtown Los Angeles.
With two debuts in July, August will bring the opening of the 34,000-square-foot Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market at 701 W. Cesar Chavez Ave. near Chinatown, said Rachel Wall, a company representative.
The grocery store will employ 65 people and will be on the ground floor of Grand Plaza, a 302-unit senior complex, catty corner from the Ramon Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts. The opening comes despite protests and legal maneuvers from union groups, certain politicians and others who oppose Wal-Mart’s hiring practices or believe the store will harm nearby mom and pop shops.
Wal-Mart joins other grocers like Smart & Final, which is set for a July 18 opening at 845 S. Figueroa St., and City Target, which debuted at the FIGat7th shopping plaza in October and includes a grocery section. Another smaller independent market, Urban Radish, opened July 4 in the Arts District.
