Gloria C. Mackenzie, Powerball Lottery Winner, Claims $590 Million May 18 Jackpot

A Florida woman has claimed a $590 million jackpot, state lottery officials announced at a press conference Wednesday.
Gloria C. Mackenzie, 84, bought the winning ticket for the May 18 drawing, which was the largest jackpot ever in the multi-state lottery's history. Mackenzie did not appear at the news conference.
Florida ABC affiliate WFTS reported that a woman claiming to have won the multimillion dollar jackpot reported to the state's lottery headquarters around noon on Wednesday.

Mackenzie, a resident of Zephyrhills, Fla., had agreed to split the winnings with her son, Scott. Mackenzie released a statement that was read at the state lottery news conference.
"While in line at Publix, another lottery player was kind enough to let me go ahead of them in line to purchase the winning Quick Pick ticket," Mackenzie said in the statement. "We are grateful for this blessing of winning the Florida Lottery Powerball jackpot and appreciate the interest of the public, the State of Florida and the lottery."
The $590 million jackpot, which was purchased at a Publix Supermarket in Zephyrhills, Fla., remained unclaimed for more than two weeks.
Prior to the announcement, the town of about 13,000 residents was abuzz with speculation about who the winner might be. Under Florida law, the winner of the lottery cannot remain anonymous.
"Being in a small town, everybody knows everybody and in some cases, everybody's business," Dave Walters, a reporter for the Zephyrhills News community newspaper, told the Associated Press. "It's hard to keep a secret in this town, but this is one of the biggest mysteries we've had in a long, long time."

In November 2012, a $587 million prize was split between two winning tickets.
This story has been updated to include Gloria Mackenzie's statement.
CORRECTION: An earlier version of this post misspelled the town of which Mackenzie is a resident. It is Zephyrhills, Fla.

Leslie Van Houten, Charles Manson Follower Convicted In Tate-LaBianca Murders, Denied Parole For 20th Time

Leslie Van Houten
Leslie Van Houten speaks during her parole hearing in this June 28, 2002, file photo taken at the California Institution for Women in Corona, Calif.
CHINO, Calif. — A parole panel refused an emotional bid by former Charles Manson follower Leslie Van Houten to release her from prison 44 years after she participated in a notorious set of murders.
The denial came at the 63-year-old's 20th parole hearing on Wednesday, where the panel heard from relatives of the victims who were opposed to her release.
Board of Parole Hearings Commissioner Jeffrey Ferguson told Van Houten she had failed to explain how someone as intelligent and well-bred as she was could have committed the "cruel and atrocious" murders of Leno and Rosemary La Bianca. She won't be eligible to ask for parole again for five years, but Ferguson said she could request another hearing sooner if circumstances change.
"The crimes will always be a factor," he said. "The question is whether the good will ever outweigh the bad. It certainly didn't today."
Van Houten was convicted of murder and conspiracy for her role in the slayings of wealthy Los Angeles grocers Leno and Rosemary La Bianca. They were stabbed to death in August 1969, one night after Manson's followers killed actress Sharon Tate and four others. Van Houten was 19 at the time.
Van Houten did not participate in the Tate killings but went along the next night when the La Biancas were slain in their home. During the penalty phase of her trial she confessed to joining in stabbing Mrs. La Bianca after she was dead.
"I know I did something that is unforgiveable, but I can create a world where I make amends," Van Houten said before the decision.
With survivors of the LaBiancas sitting behind her at the California Institution for Women, Van Houten acknowledged participating in the killings ordered by Manson.
"He could never have done what he did without people like me," said Van Houten, who has been in custody for 44 years.
The ruling came after a full-day hearing at which six representatives of the La Bianca family spoke in anguish about the loss of the couple.
"Today after 44 years, your crimes still instill fear in innocent people," said Ferguson. "The motive was the worst I can imagine, to incite a race war. Your crimes were gruesome and bloody."
During her comments, Van Houten repeatedly said that she was traumatized by her parents' divorce when she was 14, her pregnancy soon after and her mother's insistence that she have an abortion.
"Many people have traumatic childhoods," said Ferguson. "You have failed to explain at this time what would cause you to commit such horrific atrocities."
Van Houten showed no reaction to the ruling and quickly was escorted out of the room.
In her final statement, Van Houten apologized to everyone she harmed.
"I know that the pain goes on generationally. I want the victims to know I'm deeply ashamed of what I have done," she said.
After years of therapy and self-examination, she said, she realizes that what she did was "like a pebble falling in a pond which affected so many people."
"Mr. and Mrs. La Bianca died the worst possible deaths a human being can," she said.
Arguing to the board, Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Patrick Sequiera said some crimes may be an exception to the law guaranteeing the possibility of parole.
"There are certain crimes that are so heinous, so atrocious, so horrible that it should cause denial of parole," he said, elaborating on Van Houten's contradictions over the years.
In response, Van Houten's lawyer, Michael Satris, said his client "sank to the depths of Dante's inferno and she put herself there by consorting with the devil himself, Charles Manson."
However, Satris said his client has totally reformed herself.
"Leslie committed a great sin, a great crime in 1969, and in that time (in prison) she has developed into the equal of a saint," he said. "Everything she does is for humanity."
Van Houten was portrayed at trial by her defense lawyers as the youngest and least culpable of those convicted with Manson, a young woman from a good family who had been a homecoming princess and showed promise until she became involved with drugs and was recruited into Manson's murderous cult.
Now deeply wrinkled with long gray hair tied back in a ponytail, Van Houten at times seemed near tears but did not break down at the Wednesday hearing.
She said that when she heard the Manson family had killed Tate and others, she felt left out and asked to go along the second night.
Asked if she would have done the same had children been involved, she answered, "I can't say I wouldn't have done that. I'd like to say I wouldn't, but I don't know."
Asked to explain her actions, she said, "I feel that at that point I had really lost my humanity and I can't know how far I would have gone. I had no regard for life and no measurement of my limitations."
Van Houten has previously been commended for her work helping elderly women inmates at the California Institution for Women. She earned two college degrees while in custody.
Other members of Manson's murderous "family" have lost bids for parole.
One former follower, Bruce Davis, was approved for parole last year only to have Gov. Jerry Brown veto the plan in March, saying he wanted the 70-year-old Davis to reveal more details about the killings of a stunt man and a musician. Davis was not involved in the slayings of Sharon Tate and six others.
Manson, now 78, has stopped coming to parole hearings, sending word that prison is his home and he wants to stay there.

Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert and Florida Georgia Line Win Big at CMT Music Awards!

If you didn't watch the CMT Music Awards, then you totally missed out!

Not only was the show packed with appearances from just about every country singer out there, but it was also filled with spectacular performances, great speeches and eye-catching fashion.

Some of the best moments of the night came from country music's leading ladies: Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert!

Taylor didn't impress us with her red carpet outfit but she did stun us during her "Red" performance on stage. What was even more surprising was that she didn't take home any awards!

Miranda was at the show without her husband Blake Shelton, who was working in Los Angeles. Not only did she perform and win two awards, but she presented and accepted an award for her hubby too. If you asked her, the best part of her night was probably when Lenny Kravitz kissed her!

Carrie seemed like she was definitely the leading lady of the night though. She gave a very moving performance for the victims of the recent Oklahoma tornadoes. She also won the award for Video of the Year, which is decided by voting fans, and gave it to her husband Mike Fisher who was there with her on his 33rd birthday.

The biggest male winners of the night were newcomers, Florida Georgia Line, who took home TWO awards and performed with rapper Nelly!

What was your favorite part of the night?

Obama National Security Adviser To Be Replaced By Susan Rice

news

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama's top national security adviser Tom Donilon is resigning and will be replaced by Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the U.N. who has been a lightning rod for Republican criticism over faulty explanations for the attack that killed four Americans in Benghazi, Libya.
Donilon has been a key foreign policy adviser to President Barack Obama. But the 58-year-old had been expected to depart sometime this year, with Rice seen as the likely candidate to replace him. Her selection is sure to anger congressional Republicans, who have accused the administration of inconsistency and a cover-up in the Benghazi attacks.
Rice, a close Obama confidante, came under withering criticism from Republicans as part of the investigations into the deadly attack on a U.S. compound in Benghazi. Relying on talking points from the intelligence community, Rice said in television interviews that the attacks were likely spontaneous, which was later proven incorrect.
Obama considered nominating Rice as his second-term secretary of state, but she withdrew amid the GOP criticism, saying she didn't want her confirmation fight to be a distraction for the White House. The president instead nominated John Kerry, who easily won confirmation from his former Senate colleagues.
Rice's new post as national security adviser does not require Senate confirmation. A White House official confirmed the foreign policy personnel changes Wednesday morning ahead of a planned announcement by the president in the afternoon. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the changes before they were publicly announced.
Obama will also name Samantha Power, a human rights expert and former White House adviser, to replace Rice at the United Nations. Power left the White House earlier this year.
Power won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize in general nonfiction for her book "A Problem From Hell: America and the Age of Genocide," which examined U.S. foreign policy toward genocide in the 20th century. She is a graduate of Yale University and Harvard Law School.
According to a biography on the White House website, Power also served as a professor at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government, where she taught courses on U.S. foreign policy, human rights, and extremism.
The White House official said Donilon is expected to stay on the job until early July, after Obama wraps up overseas trips to Europe and Africa, as well as an unusual summit in California later this week with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Taco Bell employee to be FIRED for licking TACOS..

The California Taco Bell employee who became instantly (in)famous after showing his enthusiasm for a stack of shells will be fired.
The company confirmed the decision Monday in a statement on its website:
Our franchisee is responsible for the employment and conduct of his restaurant’s employees and he has informed us that he immediately suspended the employee shown in the photo and is in the process of terminating his employment.

Taco Bell notes that the photo originated in March, when two workers took it in response to a contest that was intended to show employees enjoying a new product (ostensibly, Cool Ranch Doritos-flavored taco shells). The company said that the photo violated the spirit of the contest, and that the employees knew that and didn't submit the photo. However, that didn't stop the gross picture from ending up on social media.
Although the company does not believe that the employee intended to harm anyone by appearing to lick what are believed to be taco shells used in training, Taco Bell admitted that the picture did not reflect well on anyone involved.
Commenters on Taco Bell's Facebook page certainly shared that negative impression when the photo first surfaced Sunday.
Reddit user Andrewkh65 posted an unverified Snapchat image of what appears to be the former franchise employee Monday. The image includes the message, "Just got the call. I'm fired."

U.S. ITC Finds Apple Violates Samsung Patent, Issues Limited Import Ban On AT&T iPhone 4, 3GS And Some iPads

apple-samsung

Apple has been found to be in violation of a Samsung patent, which has resulted in a limited import ban on certain products, including the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, original iPad 3G and iPad 2 3G, all only for AT&T-specific models. More details are emerging about the ruling, but it’s likely this affects only older devices on AT&T because it relates to a specific component used before wider release of the iPhone with multi-band support.
The import ban could theoretically result in Apple being unable to sell the devices in question in the U.S., should all appeals fail and the decision be upheld, since Apple wouldn’t be able to bring the devices into the country from its overseas suppliers and manufacturing facilities. As this is an ITC ruling, it would have to be appealed to the White House or Federal Circuit to be overturned, notes Nilay Patel of The Verge on Twitter.

Michelle Obama DNC Fundraiser Speech Interrupted By LGBT Protester

 Michelle Obama Dnc

WASHINGTON -- First lady Michelle Obama's speech Tuesday evening at a private Democratic National Committee fundraiser was interrupted by a protester, who demanded equality for gays and lesbians.
About 12 minutes into Obama's 20-minute speech, a woman standing at the front of the crowd began yelling for an executive order on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights.
"One of the things that I don't do well is this," replied Obama to loud applause. She left the lectern and approached the protester, inviting the woman to "listen to me, or you can take the mic, but I'm leaving. You all decide. You have one choice."
The crowd shouted that they wanted Obama to stay, and one woman near the protester said, "You need to go!"
The protester was then escorted out, saying she wanted "federal equality before I die."
Heather Cronk, co-director of the pro-LGBT rights group GetEQUAL, said the protester was Ellen Sturtz, 56, one of the organization's activists.
Sturtz was calling for an executive order to bar discrimination by federal contractors based on sexual orientation or gender identity. LGBT groups have been disappointed that President Barack Obama has refused to issue such an order, while the Employment Non-Discrimination Act -- which would prohibit such discrimination in hiring more broadly -- remains stuck in Congress.
