Retired police officer kills daughters, self in NY suburb
(Reuters) -- A recently retired suburban New York police officer shot and killed his two daughters before killing himself at the family's home, media and authorities said on Saturday.
Glen Hochman, 52, who retired from the White Plains police force last month, killed two daughters, ages 17 and 13, before killing himself in Harrison, an affluent town about 15 miles northeast of New York City, newspapers and broadcasters reported, citing police sources.
Hochman's wife and an older daughter were not home at the time.
"The department is shocked and horrified by the news of this unfathomable tragedy," David Chong, White Plains' public safety commissioner, said in a statement. Hochman served 22 years on the White Plains police force, he said.
Police in Harrison could not be reached for official confirmation or details of the killings.
Harrison schools superintendent Louis Wool released a statement on the girls' deaths.
"In this awful moment, let us remember how proud we are of them, and how much they have helped others," he said.
The head of the school attended by one of the victims also issued a statement offering condolences. Friends of the slain teenagers expressed their shock on Twitter.

TV Empire ratings: Guess what just happened
If your guess was: “Empire’s ratings just defied all the laws of broadcast television to once again rise to a record number” … then you would be right.
Wednesday’s episode hit 12.9 million viewers and a huge 5.1 rating among adults 18-49. That’s up 6 percent from last week in the demo (which, of course, was a record rating too).
In total viewers, Empire has gone up every single week – six total – since its premiere. Among adults 18-49, the series has risen five out of six weeks. I asked one broadcast analyst for a historic comparison point to help put the latest gain into some kind of perspective compared to other dramas that have risen in the ratings over the years. The rep replied: “Don’t have any new historical references for its post-premiere growth. It has literally exceeded all Nielsen total viewer records to date.” In other words, after Empire broke that record a couple weeks ago where the hip-hop drama series posted more consecutive ratings gains than any other new broadcast show in at least 23 years, the rise of Empire has become unprecidented.
There is, however, one drama left for Empire to beat in the demo, and it’s not on broadcast – AMC’s The Walking Dead. Sunday’s hour had a 6.2 rating. Until a couple weeks ago, I would have assumed TWD would be out of reach of any other drama. Not anymore.

Alibaba founder Jack Ma was rejected from 30 jobs, including KFC, before becoming China's richest man Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/alibaba-founder-jack-ma-on-rejection-2015-2#ixzz3S7YIhps9
Jack Ma is one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the world.
His e-commerce company, Alibaba, attracts 100 million shoppers a day. Ma is worth an estimate $20.4 billion.
But before he was the richest person in China, Ma went through a lot of rejection.
In a recent interview with Charlie Rose, the businessman revealed that he failed a college entrance exam three times.
Once he ruled out college, Ma applied for 30 different jobs and got rejected.
"I went for a job with the police; they said, 'you're no good,'" Ma told Rose. "I even went to KFC when it came to my city. Twenty-four people went for the job. Twenty-three were accepted. I was the only guy ..."
When Ma founded Alibaba in 1998, he was met with more obstacles.
The brand did not turn a profit for the first three years, and Ma had to get creative. One of the company's main challenges was that it had no way to do payments, and no banks would work with him.
Ma decided to start his own payment program called Alipay. The program transfers payments of different currencies between international buyers and sellers.
"So many people I talked to at that time about Alipay, they said, 'This is the stupidest idea you've ever had,'" he said. "I didn't care if it was stupid as long as people could use it."
Today, 800 million people use Alipay.
Whoopi Goldberg reportedly urged to stay at 'The View'
Believe it or not, reports of more drama at the "The View." Whoopi Goldberg was or is all set to play a lead role in a new ABC comedy pilot, but she may or may not have been pulled from it by ABC execs.
Tuesday evening, multiple outlets said Goldberg would star in a new comedy, "Delores & Jermaine," but that the filming schedule would let her keep her role as co-host of the "The View."
But Tuesday night, a very different claim from The New York Post, which cited anonymous sources.
The Post said Goldberg planned to completely leave "The View" to focus on the new show, and that ABC execs had changed their minds about letting her go because of Rosie O'Donnell's exit just last week.
"Thank you to all the cast here, and the crew."
O'Donnell left after just five months back on "The View," saying she needed to focus on family and her health.
Still, Goldberg's not switching networks or anything here with the potential new show, so would it really be a problem? She weighed in with the Post, and seemed to deny reports she couldn't do what she pleased, but also to hint at turmoil.
"I've always been able to come and go as I choose. ... I have a really good job, but I also have bosses. They make decisions ... sometimes you don't like them and you have to live with them."
The continued drama comes amidst months of reports on declining ratings and behind-the-scenes drama for the show. Things have been far from smooth sailing since Barbara Walters' departure last year.
Goldberg is the last woman standing from the old cast at this point, so ABC may feel it needs her to focus on pushing the show back to success.
But if Goldberg does move forward with the ABC pilot, it would be her first full-time scripted series since about 10 years ago, when she was on the short-lived NBC show, "Whoopi."
