BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) -- If there is a lesson to take away from attending Jay Z's super-exclusive pre-Grammy party, it's simple - don't come late.
Some guests learned the hard way Saturday when they were left on the outside looking in at the palatial mansion where the rapper's annual Roc Nation brunch was held.
Most of the guests were bused to the secret location of the swanky bash - a private gated mansion. But it proved to be so popular that authorities prevented some guests from coming inside after a certain point because of overcrowding concerns.
Those who were lucky enough to make it in were rewarded. Jay Z, dressed in a suit and smoking a cigar, hugged his protégés Rihanna and Rita Ora and mingled with guests inside the stunning estate, which included fountains, a majestic pool, mouthwatering spread, free flowing drinks and a cigar station. Other guests included Will Smith's children Jaden and Willow Smith, Ne-Yo, as well as rappers T.I., J. Cole and Wale.
Jay Z's annual brunch was just one of several events held on the eve of the Grammys. The Recording Academy had its own brunch with Janelle Monae at the Grammy Museum, where the singer performed for an audience that included schoolchildren and Make-A-Wish kids.
And Lorde, Robin Thicke and others performed at a brunch held by Universal Music Group.
Rihanna, Shakira, Timbaland and Haim are some of the musicians managed by Roc Nation.

Birds attack peace doves freed from Pope's window

Birds attack peace doves freed from Pope's window

VATICAN CITY (AP) - Two white doves that were released by children standing alongside Pope Francis as a peace gesture have been attacked by other birds.
As tens of thousands of people watched in St. Peter's Square on Sunday, a seagull and a large black crow swept down on the doves right after they were set free from an open window of the Apostolic Palace.
One dove lost some feathers as it broke free from the gull. But the crow pecked repeatedly at the other dove.
It was not clear what happened to the doves as they flew off.
While speaking at the window beforehand, Francis had appealed for peace in Ukraine, where anti-government protesters have died.

Hillary Clinton Won A Grammy Award In 1997

The 56th annual Grammy Awards take place on Sunday, but let's remember the 39th annual Grammy Awards, since that's when Hillary Rodham Clinton was awarded top honors in the Best Spoken Word or Non-musical Album category by The Recording Academy. Clinton won for the audio version of "It Takes A Village," her 1996 book which detailed how the then-first lady hoped to "to help make our society into the kind of village that enables children to become smart, able, resilient adults."

Clinton isn't the only political figure to have Grammy Awards. Barack Obama has won two Grammys for Best Spoken Word or Non-musical Album, while Jimmy Carter and Clinton's husband, Bill Clinton, took home trophies in the category as well.

'Today' names Des Moines the wealthiest American city

If you're looking to relocate somewhere new, you might want to listen up. 'Today' featured America's wealthiest city, and it's one you might not expect.

news
Yup, not Manhattan, Miami, or even Silicon Valley. It's Des Moines, Iowa.

In the past, the capital of Iowa has been declared the best place for business and careers by Forbes.
Kiplinger also called it the best city for families.

Back in 2011, U.S. News & World Report ranked Des Moines No. 1 among the richest metro areas. The capital of Iowa has the highest median income in the nation relative to the cost of living.

KCCI points out that the definition of rich depends on one's perspective.

Still, residents tell "Today' that living in a Midwestern city of only half a million people, is, well, priceless.

'Today' also reports that the cost of living in Des Moines is actually 10 percent lower than the national average.

Justin Bieber was arrested for DUI early Thursday monring and it wasn't pretty

Justin Bieber was arrested for DUI early Thursday monring and it wasn't pretty -- cops say Justin was wasted and resisted arrest and cussed the cop out, dropping multiple F  bombs ... TMZ has learned.

Law enforcement tells us ... Bieber was busted in Miami Beach and it didn't end with DUI ... he was also busted for resisting arrest without violence, drag racing and driving on an expired license.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... they believe Justin was under the influence of both drugs and alcohol.

According to the police report -- obtained by TMZ -- cops approached Bieber's car and they instantly realized he reeked of alcohol and had bloodshot eyes.  He had a "stupor" look on his face.

The police report says ... Bieber was defiant from the get-go, yelling at the cops, "Why the f**k are you doing this?"  He also yelled, "What the f**k did I do.  Why did you stop me?"

When the officer tried to perform a routine pat down, Bieber said, "I ain't got no f**king weapons, why do you have to search me?  What the f**k is this about?"  Bieber claimed he wasn't drunk and coming back from recording music.  That's not true, because we knew he was at a club.

Now the basis for the resisting arrest charge -- Before the pat down, as Bieber got out of the car, he "kept going into his pants pocket."  The cop ordered him to put his hands on the vehicle, and Bieber initially complied but soon took his hands off the car, turned and then cussed out the cop.
The cop then grabbed Justin by the right arm, Justin pulled his arm away, and said, "What the f**k are you doing?"

The report says Justin was driving between 55 and 60 MPH in a 30 MPH residential area.

Bieber is now in custody and is at the police department where he is being tested -- presumably to more precisely measure his blood alcohol level.  Our law enforcement sources say Justin was given a field sobriety test at the scene ... and failed.

His next stop will be jail, where he will be booked and processed and bail will be set.

012214_bieber_drive_launch
We're told Bieber had just left SET nightclub and was driving a yellow Lamborghini at the time cops spotted him in a residential neighborhood.   Our sources say Justin's people actually blocked the street off so Bieber could drag race.

0123_justin_bieber_set_nightclub_launch

Sources say the person Justin was racing was also arrested.  We're told that driver was Khalil, a well-known rapper on Def Jam Records.  He was in a red Ferrari.

0123_lambo

Justin had a passenger in the car -- a model.

The traffic stop was for drag racing and cops determined he was driving under the influence.

The photo (below) is Chantel -- the model who was in Justin's yellow Lambo -- and Justin.  The pic was NOT taken at the time of the arrest.

No, Netflix Isn't Actually Killing HBO And Showtime, Networks Say

netflix
A market research firm is backing down from its widely circulated report claiming that HBO and other premium TV providers lost subscribers over the last two years while Netflix gained.
NPD Group removed the press release from its website and issued a "data clarification" statement on Wednesday that said it "should not have called out declines in subscribers for specific premium TV channels, HBO and Showtime."
"The data used for the press release pertains to aggregate results for all premium TV channels and does indicate that the overall number of subscribers has declined, based on a representative sample of the U.S. population," NPD said in a statement to The Huffington Post. "However, upon further examination of the results, there is data supporting the conclusion that individual subscribers are either subscribing to more channels, or adding channels over time."
Basically, NPD group says that fewer households are subscribing overall, but those households that are subscribing are subscribing to more premium channels.
"The universe of overall premium channel subscribers is shrinking, but the subscribers that are sticking with premium TV are taking on more channels," Russ Crupnick, senior vice president of industry analysis at NPD Group, told The Huffington Post. "You do have a lot of consumers who are staying in premium TV and bulking up on the number of channels they're subscribing to."
An NPD Group spokesman said that the company would issue a corrected press release this week.
HBO and other premium TV providers aggressively disputed the original NPD report after it came out on Monday.
"The research is simply incorrect," HBO said in a statement to The Huffington Post.
Rich Greenfield, a prominent media analyst (who, coincidentally, co-hosted Netflix's earnings call with investors on Wednesday), jumped in on Tuesday evening to discredit the report. In a blog post, Greenfield called the claim "100 percent false."
"We believe premium growth has been quite healthy, with absolute premium subscribers now at an all-time high driven by improving quality of content," Greenfield wrote.
NPD Group's original report was picked up by many news outlets, including The Huffington Post.
NPD surveyed four waves of more than 7,000 consumers -- in March and August 2012, and during the same two months in 2013 -- and reported that over the last two years, the overall percentage of households that subscribe to premium TV channels declined by 6 percentage points. At the same time, the percentage of households that subscribe to streaming services like Netflix, Hulu Plus and Amazon Prime Instant Video, increased by 4 percentage points.
NPD also said the number of subscriptions has decreased, writing that "subscriptions to HBO, Showtime and other premium TV channels have declined over the past two years, as Netflix and other subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) services have gained in popularity."
Yet HBO said that both HBO and Cinemax "have shown significant domestic subscriber growth in the past two years."
HBO and Cinemax added a total of 1.9 million combined domestic subscribers in 2012, Jeffrey L. Bewkes, the CEO of Time Warner, HBO's parent company, said in an earnings call last year. This number includes so-called churn -- people who've cancelled their subscriptions.
Showtime, for its part, said in a statement to HuffPost that NPD's study "does not accurately reflect actual subscriber counts." The company cited figures from SNL Kagan, the media research firm, that said Showtime grew by 1.5 million subscribers from March 2012 to September 2013.
Starz grew from 20.1 million subscribers in March 2012 to 22 million in September 2013, while its sister channel Encore grew from 33.6 million to 35 million over the same period.
Data from SNL Kagan backs up the networks' claims. HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, Starz and EPIX all have increased their total subscriber counts in the last two years, according to SNL Kagan. And the percentage of households in the U.S. with premium TV subscriptions actually increased from the first quarter of 2012 to the third quarter of last year, according to SNL Kagan.
Netflix is also thriving. Subscriptions have surged over the last couple of years, jumping to more than 31.7 million in the fourth quarter of 2013 from 22.02 million in the first quarter of 2012.
Analysts said the reason people keep shelling out big bucks for premium TV is simple: There's really good stuff to watch.
"Content is king. Period. End of report," said Jim Nail, principal analyst at Forrester, the information and technology research firm. "Most of Netflix is still old movies [and] past seasons of TV shows, and while that has a certain degree of quality, it's certainly not a full substitute for the latest episode of 'Boardwalk Empire' or 'Game of Thrones.'"

Bill Gates: By 2035, There Will Be Almost No Poor Countries

 news

NEW YORK (AP) — Philanthropists Bill and Melinda Gates pitched an optimistic future for the world's poor and sick in their annual letter Tuesday, arguing passionately against three myths they say hurt efforts to bring people out of poverty, save lives and improve living conditions.
In their sixth yearly letter, which in the past has focused exclusively on the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's annual activities, the co-chairmen of the world's largest charitable foundation seek to dispel notions that poor countries are doomed to stay poor, that foreign aid is wasteful and that saving lives will cause overpopulation.
"All three reflect a dim view of the future, one that says the world isn't improving but staying poor and sick, and getting overcrowded," Bill Gates writes in the 16-page letter. "We're going to make the opposite case, that the world is getting better, and that in two decades it will be better still."
Gates says GDP per capita figures, adjusted for inflation to 2005 dollars, show that many countries such as China, India, Brazil and even Botswana that were once considered poor now have growing economies.
And in Africa, a place the Microsoft co-founder says is all too often dismissed as hopeless, life expectancy has risen since the 1960s despite the HIV epidemic. Also, more children are going to school and fewer people are hungry.
"I am optimistic enough about this that I am willing to make a prediction," he said. "By 2035, there will be almost no poor countries left in the world."
Gates also argues against claims that foreign aid is wasteful because it is too expensive, because it is stolen by corrupt officials receiving it or because countries who receive it become dependent on it.
He says that in Norway, the world's most generous donor of foreign aid, the amount of its budget that goes to foreign aid is only 3 percent. In the U.S., it's less than 1 percent, or about $30 billion per year, of which $11 billion goes to vaccines, bed nets and other health causes.
Measles vaccinations, eradicating smallpox, controlling tuberculosis in China and a plan to eliminate polio in Latin America are all public health efforts achieved with aid funding.
"Health aid is a phenomenal investment," he writes. "When I look at how many fewer children are dying than 30 years ago, and how many people are living longer and healthier lives, I get quite optimistic about the future."
His wife, Melinda, wrote a section of the letter dispelling the myth that saving lives worldwide will lead to overpopulation. She points to countries such as Brazil where both child mortality and birth rates have declined.
When more children survive, she says, parents have smaller families.
"The planet does not thrive when the sickest are allowed to die off, but rather when they are able to improve their lives," she says. "Human beings are not machines. We don't reproduce mindlessly. We make decisions based on the circumstances we face."
In an interview in New York City Tuesday, Gates expanded on the letter and its optimistic tone, saying the traditional headlines associated with poor countries — that they're plagued by natural disasters, political instability and corruption — have prevented people from understanding how much progress has been made.
"(The letter) comes out as what for many people will see as a stunningly positive story, because the typical headline is about the setbacks — the tornado, the regime instability and this gradual progress of less children dying of economies, even in Africa, getting richer and richer," he said. "It's not clear when someone is supposed to learn that because it's not really a standard headline."
He also said that as countries become more developed, more work needs to be done tackling the problems associated with growth, like energy consumption and climate change.
The Seattle, Wash.-based Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is the world's largest charitable foundation. It has made $28.3 billion in grant payments since its

These Billionaires Are Offering $1 Billion For the Perfect March Madness Bracket

1 billion march madness bracket
The stakes for March Madness just got a little bit higher.
Quicken Loans, founded by Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert, and Berkshire Hathaway, run by Warren Buffett, are partnering to give away $1 billion to the lucky -- or clairvoyant -- person who can correctly predict the 2014 Men's NCAA Tournament bracket.
Though the prize is high, the feat is near impossible: the contest rules for the Billion Dollar Bracket Challenge note that the odds of winning the grand prize are one in 4,294,967,296. Last year, USA Today said the odds of filling out a perfect bracket (just using math, no basketball knowledge) were even higher: 1 in 9,223,372,036,854,775,808. They said the the odds were closer to 1 in 128 billion if you do know about the sport.
In the Quicken Loans contest, the grand prize winner would receive 40 annual installments of $25 million or could opt for a lump sum of $500 million. There's also $2 million at stake for creators of less-than-perfect brackets: 20 first prize winners with the closest brackets will receive $100,000 each to use toward buying, refinancing or remodeling a home.
"While there is no simple path to success, it sure doesn't get much easier than filling out a bracket online," Buffett, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, said in a statement. "To quote a commercial from one of my companies, I'd dare say it's so easy to enter that even a caveman can do it."
As part of the promotion, Quicken will also donate $1 million to Detroit and Cleveland non-profit organizations that work on youth education. The Gawker blog Jalopnik pointed to the discrepancy:
"So if you're stuck in a cycle of poverty, you have to share $1 million between thousands of other kids between two cities. But if you're lucky at basketball, you get a billion. Good to know!"
Further details and official rules will be released when the contest begins March 3. That's more than a month to start strategizing how to create the perfect bracket.

11 Awesome Women To Watch At The 2014 Winter Olympics

Double axels, insane ski jumps and half-pipe moves -- we can hardly wait for the Winter Olympics to start.
During the 2012 Summer Olympics, we fell in love with incredible female athletes like gymnast Gabby Douglas, track star Allyson Felix and swimmer Missy Franklin. Needless to say, we were pretty sad when the Games ended. (It didn't help that we saw a lot less of Ryan Lochte, or as we like to refer to him in our office, "the gift that keeps on giving.")
Luckily, the Winter Games are bringing us a whole new round of inspiring women to be in awe of.
Here are 11 women to look out for at Sochi:
  • Gracie Gold, Figure Skating
    Getty
18-year-old Gold won her first title at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships on Jan. 12, and is expected to live up to her last name in Sochi. “The Olympics aren’t just another competition, it’s the ultimate dream," she told reporter Brandon Penny. "It’s a life experience that I’ll never forget and I’m so excited to be going.” Twitter: @GraceEGold
  • Katie Uhlaender, Skeleton
    Getty
Two-time Olympian Uhlaender has competed in national competitions since 2003, twice winning the women's Skeleton World Cup. When she isn't training for skeleton, Uhlaender raises cattle on her family's farm, and works towards competing in the Summer Olympics -- as a weightlifter. Talk about a woman of many talents. Twitter: @KatieU11
  • Sugar Todd, Speed Skating
    Getty
In Jan. 2014, Todd raised $5,500 to fund her parents' trip to Sochi to watch her compete -- and closed donations once her goal was reached despite the thousands of people who wrote in asking to give more. She wrote on her GoFundMe page: "After paying for 15 years worth of coaching, skating equipment, travel to races, and entry fees for competitions; I promise you that every little bit helps them." Could she be any more awesome? Twitter: @sugarmotion
  • Sarah Hendrickson, Ski Jumping
    Getty
Hendrickson's Olympic spot isn't entirely certain since she sustained a knee injury four months ago. But the young skiier is determined to compete, as this is the first time women's ski jump has been approved as an Olympic event. "This is special and this is what I set my heart on," Hendrickson told ESPN on Jan. 9. Twitter: @schendrickson
  • Kate Hansen, Luge
    AP
Hansen made the Olympic team despite having raced with a broken foot since October 2013. "I've learned a lot. I've learned a lot about how I work mentally," Hansen told USA Luge in Oct. 2013. "Obviously, no one wants to break their foot, but I'm capable of things that I never thought I would be capable of. I think that's the biggest deal in itself." Twitter: @k8ertotz
  • Hannah Kearney, Freestyle Skiing
    Getty
Kearney manages to balance skiing with her undergraduate studies at Dartmouth, which seems pretty incredible to us. In 2012, she told New Hampshire magazine: "A lot of satisfaction in life is cultivated by working towards a goal because you feel organically motivated and truly happy about your choices." You go, girl. Twiiter: @HK_Ski
  • Heather Richardson, Long Track Speed Skating
    Getty
Richardson is a 15-time World Cup 1000m medalist and 11-time World Cup 500m medalist who dabbles in volleyball and softball off the ice. She also plans to go to dental school when her speed skating career is over. We love her ambition. Twitter: @Hlynnrichardson
  • Gretchen Bleiler, Snowboarding
    Getty
The halfpipe snowboarder was awarded the Best Female Action Sports Athlete ESPY Award in 2008. She told Women's Health magazine her tips for staying motivated:
Goals are the secret. I have at least one goal that I work toward each day. It's all about taking hold of the day, rather than letting the day run you.
    Twitter: @GretchenBleiler
  • Meryl Davis, Ice Dancing
    Getty
Davis and her partner Charlie White won their record-breaking sixth straight U.S. Championship in ice dancing in Jan. 2014, guaranteeing their place at Sochi. “We’re working to earn gold,” Davis told NBC in Jan. 2014. “We’re working really hard for it.” Twitter: @Meryl_Davis
  • Julia Mancuso, Skiing
    AP
The two-time Olympian has a ski run named after her at Squaw Valley -- "Julia's Gold." But the skiier hasn't let her success and the attention it's brought go to her head. In 2010, she told SparkPeople about her focus on giving back:
I just feel really fortunate for all that I've been given, and to be getting paid to do what I do--the most fun thing in my life. I feel like it's really important to share the wealth and spread the love to people who need it and causes I believe in, like climate change.
    Twitter: @JuliaMancuso
  • Aja Evans, Bobsled
    Getty
Evans competed in track and field in college, and only began bobsledding after she graduated in 2010. She scored an incredible 794 out of a possible 800 points on the bobsled "combine test", so we can't wait to see what she does at Sochi. Twitter: @AjaLEvans

2 nabbed at Texas border in credit card fraud case

ADDITION Target Data Breach Texas
McALLEN, Texas (AP) - Two Mexican citizens who were arrested at the border used account information stolen during the Target security breach to buy tens of thousands of dollars' worth of merchandise, a South Texas police chief said. But a federal official said there was no connection between the arrests and the retailer's credit card data theft.
McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez said Monday that Mary Carmen Garcia, 27, and Daniel Guardiola Dominguez, 28, both of Monterrey, Mexico, had used cards containing the account information of South Texas residents. Rodriguez said they were used to purchase numerous items at national retailers in the area including Best Buy, Wal-Mart and Toys R Us.
"They're obviously selling the data sets by region," Rodriguez said.
Late Monday, a federal official with knowledge of the case said there currently was no connection between the McAllen case and any ongoing investigation into the Target breach, but would not elaborate. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was prohibited from providing details about the investigation.
The discrepancy could not immediately be rectified late Monday. Messages left for Rodriguez and his lieutenant Monday evening seeking a response to those comments weren't immediately returned.
Garcia and Guardiola were both being held Monday on state fraud charges. It was not immediately known whether they had retained lawyers.
Rodriguez said he did not know whether these arrests were the first related to the Target breach.
Asked about the McAllen arrests, Target spokeswoman Molly Snyder said in an email Monday that the investigation was active and ongoing.
"I'd have to refer you to local law enforcement there for any questions about their community," she said. The Minneapolis-based company said last week that it has stopped more than a dozen operations that sought to scam breach victims by way of email, phone calls and text messages.
A message left with the U.S. Secret Service seeking more information about the case was not immediately returned.
McAllen police began working with the Secret Service after a number of area retailers were hit with fraudulent purchases on Jan. 12. The Secret Service confirmed that the fraudulent accounts traced back to the original Target data breach from December, Rodriguez said.
Investigators fanned out to McAllen-area merchants and reviewed "miles of video" looking for the fraudsters, he said. From that, they were able to identify two people and a car with Mexican license plates.
With the help of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, investigators confirmed the identities of their suspects from immigration records of when they had entered Texas in the same vehicle, Rodriguez said. Police prepared arrest warrants last week and waited for them to return.
On Sunday morning, federal officials alerted police the two were at the Anzalduas International Bridge trying to re-enter the U.S. They were carrying 96 fraudulent cards, Rodriguez said.
Investigators believe the two were involved in both the acquisition of the fraudulent account data and the production of the cards.
Rodriguez said investigators suspect Garcia and Guardiola were singling out Sundays for their shopping sprees hoping that the banks would not be as quick to detect the fraud.
He said he expected Garcia and Guardiola to eventually face federal charges.
The Target security breach is believed to have involved 40 million credit and debit card accounts and the personal information of 70 million customers.

Carroll says Sherman sorry rant overshadowed win

news
RENTON, Wash. (AP) -- Pete Carroll pulled Richard Sherman aside on Monday and made sure his fiery cornerback understood that his rant against San Francisco's Michael Crabtree was overshadowing the Seattle Seahawks reaching their second Super Bowl in franchise history.
Sherman seemed to get Carroll's message.
"He was really clear that the last thing he wanted to do was take something away from our team, what we had accomplished," Carroll said.
Sherman became the focal point of attention - both positive and negative - after Seattle beat San Francisco 23-17 on Sunday to win the NFC championship.
Sherman was already going to be in the spotlight for what he did on San Francisco's final offensive play, twisting his body to deflect a pass intended for Crabtree into the air and allowing time for teammate Malcolm Smith to run over and make an interception in the end zone to clinch the Seahawks victory.
The athleticism on the play was worthy of praise. But Sherman's antics from that point drew praise from some for being honest and unfiltered, and criticism from others for being too harsh and combative.
"This is a very emotional kid and that's what drives him," Carroll said. "We did sit down and talk about it because I want him to present himself in his best light. He's an incredible kid.
"He has a great sense about things and understanding and sensitivity and awareness and he cares and he's a very thoughtful person so when he puts out those kind of thoughts he has to know what he's saying and understand it and I think he's very understanding at this point that he caused a stir that took away from the team."
Sherman had been rarely targeted by the 49ers, with most of Colin Kaepernick's passes being thrown in the direction of Byron Maxwell.
But in the final minute, Kaepernick decided to take a shot to the end zone with Crabtree and Sherman matched up one-on-one.
Sherman won the matchup, staying in position to deflect the pass and have it fall into Smith's hands, similar to a tipped interception from Sherman to safety Earl Thomas in Week 15 against the New York Giants.
Except this was far more meaningful, giving Seattle its second conference championship.
But Sherman didn't let the celebration end with Smith and his teammates.
Sherman ran over to Crabtree and gave him a pat on the backside, then appeared to extend his arm for a handshake.
Instead, Sherman got shoved in the face before picking up his personal foul as his celebration continued. The taunt included a choking gesture in the direction of Kaepernick.
Asked about the incident afterward by Fox reporter Erin Andrews, Sherman lit up Twitter with a rant that began: "I'm the best corner in the game. When you try me with a sorry receiver like Crabtree, that's the result you gonna get. Don't you ever talk about me!"
And Sherman didn't back down later, apologizing to Andrews but calling Crabtree "mediocre." He said his issues with Crabtree went back to an incident during the offseason.
Carroll said he viewed the situation as a father talking to his son and wanted Sherman to realize some more thought should have gone into what he was saying.
"There's some stuff in there I think you should think about and did you really want it to come out the way it did and talk our way through that," Carroll said. "And he didn't. He didn't feel right about that.
"There were a lot of great things that happened last night and we're talking about some other stuff."
For Carroll, the return to New York is heading back to where he got his start as a head coach in the NFL, albeit a short-lived tenure as the head coach of the Jets. Carroll was the Jets head coach for one season in 1994 before getting fired after a 6-10 season.
"I think my first time in New York as a head coach was kind of in the middle of the circle somewhere or maybe it wasn't even a circle, it might have been some other shape," Carroll joked. "It was kind of a hairy ti

Porn production moves to Vegas after condom law

Porn Goes to Vegas
Porn star Ron Jeremy poses for a photo with a fan while signing autographs during the Adult Entertainment Expo, Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, in Las Vegas. Potential opportunities for X-rated film production in Nevada were the talk of the Expo at the Hard Rock hotel and casino this week, sparked by a Los Angeles law requiring male actors to wear condoms. (AP Photo/Julie Jacobson)

By HANNA DREIER

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Lee Roy Myers has everything you'd expect to find in the nation's porn capital in Southern California: sets of a classroom, hospital room, locker room and a bedroom, as well as a list of porn stars waiting to perform. But his plywood universe is not in the San Fernando Valley. It's a few paces away from the glittery casinos of the Las Vegas Strip.
"Las Vegas is a fresh town, and it's where people need the business," said Myers, whose new studio is part of a boom in X-rated production in Sin City sparked by a Los Angeles law requiring male actors to wear condoms.
The rule and potential opportunities in Nevada were the talk of the Adult Entertainment Expo this week. The annual sex industry trade show culminates Saturday with an awards ceremony for adult films.
"It's not really an option to change the way we make our movies, and moving production isn't that hard," said porn purveyor Jules Jordan, who hid out behind nearly naked models at his booth.
Jordan warned reporters not to ask him about condoms.
The voter-approved Los Angeles regulation survived a constitutional challenge, but other lawsuits are ongoing, and the industry is still waiting for the first big prophylactic bust.
The number of permits requested to make porn films in Los Angeles County has declined by an estimated 95 percent since the law took effect, according to Film LA, a private nonprofit that issues the licenses. The number of applications fell from about 480 in 2012 to just 24 through the first nine months of 2013.
For Myers, who co-owns Mission Control studios and also directs web films, the condom police are just the start of his troubles with Los Angeles. The region had also gotten too expensive for him.
With DVD sales continuing to plummet, the bounce provided by the mommy-porn series "Fifty Shades of Grey" wearing off, and no solid business model in sight, producers in this notoriously low-budget industry are looking for new ways to cut costs.
While Los Angeles charges hundreds of dollars for location permits and requires health checks as well, Clark County, where Las Vegas is located, gives out location permits for a nominal fee and does not require health permits.
The warehouses are cheaper, and it's also more affordable to rent out mansions and put actors up in hotels. The hardest part, Myers said, is making sure the stars leave at the end of the shoot.
Myers has also found that Las Vegas, a town already suffused with commercialized sex, is less squeamish about his line of work.
"They're used to it here because they already kind of have it," he said, sitting among rows of desks in his studio's classroom set. "Figuring out how to make these things more cheaply won't include shooting in Los Angeles."
The studio sits in what was once another empty building on blighted Industrial Road behind the town's tourist corridor. Local officials appear content with the arrangement and have no plans to pass additional rules.
"It's a legalized industry and properly regulated, so I don't see it as a problem," said Clark County commissioner Chris Giunchigliani. "I think the city and the county will benefit from any expansion of the film industry. It's economic diversification."
Las Vegas is home to some major porn players, including Brazzers, Bait & Tackle, Corbin Fisher, VCX Ltd. and newcomer Bluebird Film.
Several producers with top porn purveyor Evil Angel are talking about moving to Las Vegas, according to owner John Stagliano, and enough porn stars have settled down in the area to supply all the extras a film could need, if not all the stars.
Derek Hay, owner of adult talent agency LA Direct Models, opened an office here last fall. He estimates that 20 percent of the industry will have moved to Las Vegas by the end of the year.
Some contrarians believe the boom will eventually lead Clark County to adopt the same regulations that are scaring the industry in Los Angeles. This September, the same group that championed the 2012 condom law started a similar campaign in Florida.
For now, concerns about an eventual condom showdown in the desert are not stopping producers from making investments. Myers has several producers coming through his studio this week.
After that, he will turn his attention to repurposing the cave set featured in the high fantasy spoof "Game of Bones" for another pornographic parody, based on The Hobbit.
The star of both films, James Deen, a millennial porn icon who acted alongside Lindsay Lohan in "The Canyons," said moving the industry to Las Vegas is just a band aid.
"The issue with running to Vegas is it doesn't actually fix anything," he said, taking refuge near a stairwell at the convention hall to avoid interruption by a constant stream of fans. "We should explain to the people who put that law in place why it's unnecessary, and appeal it the same way any community would appeal any asinine law."

Super Bowl, New York style, promises A-list sizzle

news
NEW YORK (AP) -- The Super Bowl practically comes with a guarantee of A-list star wattage: No matter where it's held, celebrities flock to the big game and the blowout extravaganzas connected to it.
But its location this year at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. - just outside of New York City - has raised the bar for over-the-top parties and events that one would only expect from the self-professed capital of the world.
"New York is hot and has always been hot, so the pressure is on. Energy will be pumping, wherever you may be," said Shape magazine Editor-in-Chief Tara Kraft, who is helping plan a $2,500-a-ticket event at New York's swanky Cipriani's, co-sponsored by Men's Fitness. It will feature Mary J. Blige, Marc Anthony and John Legend.
So far, it seems like the city has delivered on that promise. Jay Z will perform at DirecTV's Super Bowl Eve party; Drake is due to perform at another; the Foo Fighters are performing across from Bud Light's floating party on a cruise ship; the Kings of Leon and the Black Keys are set to rock out at two different events; GQ is planning an exclusive, invite-only party that's still under wraps but likely to attract plenty of boldface names; and Super Bowl staple parties sponsored by the likes of Playboy and Maxim are expected to be even more wild given this year's location.
"I think the expectations are a lot higher for New York," said Jon Gieselman of DirecTV, which invented the Celebrity Beach Bowl. "What's so unique about it is you're competing with other Super Bowl events but you're really competing, also, with all of the other incredible things that New York has to offer. There's so much to do in New York."
Gieselman and his team began planning two years ago, rather than the usual one, due to tight competition for suitably large venues and navigation of complicated permitting procedures. Though there's a chance for blistering cold weather or even snow on Feb. 2, DirecTV is more than prepared for inclement weather: Its eighth annual beach bowl will be inside an 88,000-square-foot structure that he boasted can withstand hurricane-force wind. It will be filled with more than 1 million pounds of sand and is set to feature stars including Shay Mitchell of "Pretty Little Liars," model Chrissy Teigen and food TV star Guy Fieri, as well as retired football greats like Joe Montana. Rockers Paramore will perform.
Like the Beach Bowl, some of the biggest events will have some access for the non-boldfaced. Time Warner Cable will stage four nights of VIP parties and concerts from a pop-up; a small number of customers can win free tickets via Twitter to see P. Diddy and Drake on Super Bowl Eve and Kings of Leon that Thursday night. Janelle Monae, Fall Out Boy, TLC, J.Cole, the Goo Goo Dolls and Gavin DeGraw are among those booked by VH1 for a concert slate dubbed the "Super Bowl Blitz," six nights of entertainment in all boroughs, plus New Jersey.
The Foo Fighters and Zac Brown Band will perform as part of Bud Light Hotel festivities near the cruise ship docked on the Hudson, along with Imagine Dragons, Run DMC and Fall Out Boy. That Friday, Nelly was booked there, on the pier next to the Intrepid for an after-party hosted by Playboy. In Brooklyn, more than 3,000 people are expected to stroll, eat and socialize their way through Taste of the NFL, a chef-heavy party that will raise money for hunger relief. Invited guests include chefs Bobby Flay, Tom Colicchio and Mario Batali, along with NFL greats Kellen Winslow Sr. and Anthony Munoz.
"I think it's really special the Super Bowl is going to be there," Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz said. "New York is already sort of pre-ready for this kind of event."
Some of the hottest parties will be unattainable to most. GQ is throwing a bash for 300 guests at the Boom Boom Room atop The Standard hotel in the meatpacking district. Superhot Grammy nominee Kendrick Lamar was tapped for two events, hosting Maxim's bash and performing at ESPN the Party, where he'll also be joined by Robin Thicke and Jermaine Dupri. And Howard Stern is having his birthday bash beforehand at an all-star event hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
Gieselman said some previous Super Bowls didn't attract the same level of celebrity to ancillary events that New York is due to bring.
"One reality of some of those other markets is you just don't have quite as many people coming in. There were no direct flights from Los Angeles to Indianapolis, for instance. That really depressed, in my mind, the number of sort of A-level celebrities," he said.
Model-turned-actress Brooklyn Decker, co-host of the two-day Leather & Laces pre-Super Bowl bash at Liberty Theater in Times Square, said the Indianapolis Super Bowl two years ago was one of her favorites.
"You got a hand-knit scarf when you landed and there definitely was a homey touch," she said.
Decker expects more action in the Big Apple.
"I feel like New York will be completely bustling, completely nonstop," said Decker, before adding with a laugh: "I'm terrified about the cold weather, but I saw some lovely hand-warmers they're going to be giving out, so hopefully that will help."

Spectacular Neon Blue Lava Pours From Indonesia's Kawah Ijen Volcano At Night

You've heard of "red hot" and "white hot" to describe searing temperatures. But what about "blue hot"?
That's the surreal hue of Indonesia's Kawah Ijen Volcano, which glows with an otherworldly "blue lava" at night. The mountain contains large amounts of pure sulfur, which emits an icy violet color as it burns, turning the rocky slopes into a hot (at least 239 degrees Fahrenheit), highly toxic environment.
Despite the dangers, photographer Olivier Grunewald captured the scene, along with a group of men who toil on the volcano at night, battling noxious gases to mine sulfur from the crater and carry it out by hand.
Miners carry between 176 and 220 pounds of sulfur chunks per trip and sell the pieces for around 2.5 cents per pound. Yahoo reports they average two loads every 24 hours, thereby doubling their salaries amid sulfurous flames that can reach 16 feet high.
The volcano is the subject of a new documentary -- produced by Grunewald and Régis Etienne, the president of Geneva's Society of Volcanology -- released earlier this month. (See the trailer, in French, below)

Amou Haji, 80-Year-Old Iranian Man, Smokes Animal Poop, Says He Hasn't Bathed In 60 Years

He claims cleanliness brings him sickness.
By that logic, you'd probably smoke animal turds, too.
Amou Haji, an 80-year-old Iranian, is being called the world's dirtiest man. In an article published Jan. 6, he told the Tehran Times that he hasn't bathed in 60 years.
Haji reportedly lives in isolation in Dejgah village, in the Southern Iranian province of Fars, subsists on rotten porcupine meat, and says the thought of a bath after all this time makes him very angry.
He said he adopted his extreme, isolated lifestyle after suffering emotional setbacks in his youth.

In addition to animal feces, Haji apparently likes regular smokes as well -- five at a time.

Michelle Obama Has a New Workout for 50: More Yoga, Less Cardio
We all know about the bicep curls behind her famous Michelle Obama Arms.

Now, as the First Lady turns 50 this week, throw in a downward dog for good measure.

In her only interview on the occasion of her milestone birthday Jan. 17, Mrs. Obama tells PEOPLE she's tweaked her workout routine with an eye toward her 70s and 80s.

"I'm seeing myself shift from weight-bearing stuff – even though that continues to be important – and the heavy cardio and running, to things like yoga that will keep me flexible," says Mrs. Obama, who will be feted Saturday at a dance party hosted by President Obama at the White House.

3 dead after shooting at Indiana grocery store

 news
ELKHART, Ind. (AP) - A gunman walked into a northern Indiana grocery store and fatally shot two people Wednesday night before he was killed by police, authorities said.
Elkhart police received a call about an active shooter at Martin's Super Market about 10 p.m. Wednesday, Indiana State Police Sgt. Trent Smith said at a news conference early Thursday.
The gunman used a semi-automatic handgun to shoot and kill a woman, then walked to another aisle and shot and killed another woman, Smith said. One victim was an employee and appeared to be in her late teens or early 20s, and the other was a shopper who appeared to be in her 40s, he said. They were found about 12 aisles apart.
Two police officers, who were on a routine call nearby, were able to quickly respond to the scene, Smith said.
The shooter was pointing his gun at a third person when the officers found him in an aisle at the store, Smith said. Elkhart police then shot and killed the gunman, who Smith said lived in the area and was in his early 20s. A large knife was also found near the man's body.
The identities of the women and gunman were not released but Smith said there was no indication that the shooter knew the victims.
"At this time, it appears that it's just random," he said.
Smith also said that there is "no doubt" the officers' quick response saved lives.
The Indiana State Police will investigate because the Elkhart Police Department was involved in the shooting, Smith said.
"We do have a lot of things to look at as far as video surveillance," Smith said, noting that state and city police also are interviewing witnesses.
Martin's Super Market posted a statement on its Facebook page, saying "Thank you to our community for your thoughts and prayers tonight. We will comment further when we can do so responsibly and appropriately."
Elkhart is in far northern Indiana, just south of the Indiana-Michigan border, and about 15 miles east of South Bend.

NFL $765 million concussion settlement denied by federal judge

PHILADELPHIA — A federal judge denied preliminary approval of a $765 million settlement of NFL concussion claims, fearing it may not be enough to cover 20,000 retired players.
U.S. District Judge Anita B. Brody asked for more financial information from the parties, a week after players' lawyers filed a detailed payout plan for her review.
Tony Dorsett (AP Photo)
"I am primarily concerned that not all retired NFL football players who ultimately receive a qualifying diagnosis or their (families) ... will be paid," Brody wrote in a 12-page opinion filed Tuesday morning.
The proposed settlement, negotiated over several months, is designed to last at least 65 years.
The awards would vary based on an ex-player's age and diagnosis. A younger retiree with Lou Gehrig's disease would get $5 million, those with serious dementia cases would get $3 million and an 80-year-old with early dementia would get $25,000.
Some critics have argued that the NFL, with more than $9 billion in annual revenues, was getting away lightly. But the players' lawyers said they will face huge challenges just to get the case to trial. They would have to prove the injuries were linked to the players' NFL service and should not be handled through league arbitration.
Layn R. Phillips, a former federal judge from California hired by Brody to lead settlement negotiations, had called the deal fair.
The NFL would also pay an additional $112 million to the players' lawyers for their fees and expenses, for a total payout of nearly $900 million.
More than 4,500 former players have filed suit, some accusing the league of fraud for its handling of concussions. They include former Dallas Cowboys running back Tony Dorsett and Super Bowl-winning quarterback Jim McMahon, who suffers from dementia.

JFK Museum releases condolence mail 50 years later

 news
BOSTON (AP) - A series of condolence messages sent after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated 50 years ago was released Tuesday from the personal papers of his widow, including a letter from the mother of one of four girls killed in the bombing of a Baptist church in Alabama during the civil rights movement.

The mail released by the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston comes from the personal papers of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. The series contains approximately 22,000 letters, telegrams and cards from people around the world.

One of the letters was sent by Maxine McNair, the mother of Denise McNair, who was 11 when she was killed in the September 1963 Ku Klux Klan bombing of the 16th Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala. The bombing occurred as Birmingham's schools were being racially integrated for the first time and came to symbolize the depth of racial hatred in the South. The event was later seen as helping to spur the passage of civil rights laws.

In her letter, Maxine McNair likens her shock when she heard about the president's assassination with the shock she felt when her daughter was killed.

"When the tragic news came across the air waves, again my heart said, 'It isn't true, It didn't happen,'" Maxine McNair wrote to Mrs. Kennedy in the letter, sent five months after her daughter was killed.

She tells Mrs. Kennedy that she and her husband are praying for her and her children.

"Isn't it strange how people with so much to give to the world are taken? That's God's will however, and not for us to questions," she wrote.

Unlike the condolence mail in the library's John F. Kennedy papers, the newly released documents were managed by Mrs. Kennedy's personal secretaries because they required special handling or included requests for charity, Mass cards, photographs or other wishes.

Each piece includes an outgoing response from Mrs. Kennedy's office.

The collection also includes a photograph of a young boy named Kennedy in Nigeria holding a picture of the president and a letter form a French teacher describing memorial tributes made by her students.

A 10-year-old girl from Louisiana wrote Mrs. Kennedy and invited her to visit.

"I think your (sic) the nicest lady in the whole world," she wrote. "I mean it, too."

The collection is only accessible by visiting the library, and is not available online.

The personal papers of Mrs. Kennedy were donated to the library by Caroline Kennedy and John F. Kennedy Jr.

Why Didn't Willow Smith Want to Star in Her Dad's Production of 'Annie'?

Quvenzhane Wallis will star as the lead in the upcoming Annie remake, which is co-produced by Jay-Z and Will Smith.

Surprisingly, though, Will's own daughter Willow Smith passed on playing the main part.

"I just wanted to chill, and be at home, and decompress, and just find out what I wanna do and where I stand on this planet, with the little tiny place we have," Willow said in an interview with V magazine, obtained exclusively by E! News.

"I'm enjoying just being independent and doing my own thing," she explained.

Both Willow and her brother Jaden Smith have already starred in feature films with their famous father, so maybe Willow wants to show the world that she's more than just "Will Smith's daughter."

Either way, it sounds like this 13-year-old is already doing some serious soul-searching. With the level of maturity she's exhibiting, maybe she could star in a remake of 13 Going on 30 instead!

Student of New Mexico shooting: 'Blood everywhere'

ROSWELL, N.M. (AP) - It was supposed to be like any other day.
Students escaping New Mexico's chilly temperatures congregated in the Berrendo Middle School gym before class started. Then, 13-year-old students Evan James and Kayla Koren, standing on opposite sides of the gym, heard a loud pop.
When they looked up, they saw blood and a fellow student on the floor, the victim of a gunshot wound to the face. A 12-year-old classmate holding a 22-gauge sawed-off shotgun stood nearby.
"I just saw blood everywhere," Essance Sosa, 12, said Tuesday. "Everyone started screaming and running."
Witnesses say that for the next 10 seconds or so, panic engulfed the gym and, eventually, the entire Roswell school Tuesday. Word began to spread that a student had opened fire, injuring a male and female student. Those who could, quickly texted parents and friends, and worried family members began frantically calling the school.
An 11-year-old boy was critically injured and a 13-year-old girl was in stable condition.
Officials credit John Masterson, an eighth-grade social studies teacher, with saving lives as he immediately stepped in and talked the boy into dropping his weapon. Masterson then held him until authorities arrived.
"He stood there and allowed the gun to be pointed right at him," Gov. Susana Martinez told a packed room of 1,500 or so people at a prayer vigil late Tuesday, "so there would be no more young kids hurt."
Officials also credit previous "active shooter" drills by Roswell Independent School District for preparing teachers and students, who say they were ready for what happened Tuesday morning. Students say they even thought the shooting was a surprise drill at first.
"I thought it was a drill. I really did," James said. "Then, I realized it wasn't."
Investigators still aren't sure why the boy, who has not been named by authorities or formally charged, opened fire. Authorities said the boy sneaked the shotgun onto campus through a bag or musical instrument case.
State Police Chief Pete Kassetas disputed a report from a hospital spokesman who said nurses treating the boy indicated he was the shooter's target. He said a motive still is not known.
"We just don't have a lot of information," Kassetas told reporters late Tuesday.
The suspected shooter was transferred to an Albuquerque psychiatric hospital following a hearing Tuesday, according to attorney Robert Gorence, who is representing his family. Gorence said the family would release a statement Wednesday.
Kassetas said authorities have issued search warrants for the boy's locker, his bag and his parents' home. He said he did not know what had been found by late Tuesday. They're not yet sure where the boy got the gun.
Officials at University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas, said an 11-year-old boy was flown there in critical condition and a 13-year-old girl arrived in serious condition.
The governor said late Tuesday that the boy underwent a second surgery. She identified the girl as Kendal Sanders, 13, and said her condition was upgraded to stable.
Martinez said the family of the injured boy has asked that his name not be released while he recovers.
During a prayer vigil at the Roswell Convention Center hours after the shooting, an emotional crowd gathered to sing and hug as pastors spoke of healing and forgiveness. Pastors urged residents to pray for the suspected shooter.
"No superintendent ever wants to go through something like this," Roswell Superintendent Tom Burris said. "If you ever do, you want to have a strong community like here in Roswell," which is a center for ranching and farming and has a population of about 50,000.
Before the vigil, an emotional Martinez spoke to students who witnessed the shooting and urged them to talk to counselors and "let it out."
That's what she told James, who listened and nodded.
"We're all in shock," Koren said. "I'm never going to forget what I saw."

Tamera Mowry Recalls Shocking Comments About Her Interracial Marriage

news

"White man's whore." "Back in the day, you cost $300, but now, you're giving it away for free." These are the hateful comments 35-year-old Tamera Mowry, one of the identical twin stars of the '90s television sitcom "Sister, Sister," says she received after she married Fox News Channel correspondent Adam Housley in 2011. In the above clip from "Oprah: Where Are They Now?" she opens up about the intense hatred she experienced on social media for marrying outside her race.
"See, this is where I get emotional, because it's hurtful," Mowry says. "Because when my husband and I are so openly -- and we're fine with showing -- is love. Love. But people choose to look past love and spew hate. That's what hurts me, because I've never experienced so much hate ever in my life, ever."
Growing up in a biracial family, Mowry says she couldn't even fathom the hateful words she's heard about her marriage. "My mom is a beautiful black woman and my dad is an amazing white man, and I grew up seeing a family," she says.
An especially hurtful comment she's heard involves her twin sister, who is married to actor Cory Hardrict. "They say, 'Oh, Tia's a true black woman because she married a black man,'" Tamera says. "Oh – I'm less of a black person because I married white?"
Though the words are painful, Mowry says she knows what she has. "I love my husband so much, I love our family, I love our dynamic. I'm proud to be in the relationship that I am because it's based on love," Mowry says. "Pure love."
"Oprah: Where Are They Now?" airs Fridays at 8 p.m. ET on OWN.

Target CEO 'Still Shaken' by Data Breach, Vows to 'Make It Right'

Target CEO still shaken by the data breach, vows to make it right

For Target Chairman and CEO Gregg Steinhafel, Dec. 15 started out as a normal Sunday. He was at home, having coffee with his wife. That's when he got the first call about the cyber security breach at the retailer, which would to date put the personal information of as many as 110 million customers at risk.

"My heart sunk," Steinhafel reflected, describing his initial reaction to word of the attack, which had hit Target at the worst time with the busy holiday shopping season in full-swing and Christmas just 10 days away.

"It's hard for me to describe the feeling that came over me," he revealed in a CNBC interview -- his first since Target acknowledged the attack -- four days after Steinhafel was initially informed.

While it's been about a month since Steinhafel learned of the breach, he said he's "still shaken by it." He said he's had many "sleepless nights" already, but expects many more because "we are not going to sleep until we get it right and we regain the trust of our guest. And we're gonna be better as a result of this."

He knows his customers are still frustrated, and said that "they have every right to be."
On Dec. 19, Target (TGT) first disclosed that as many 40 million credit and debit cards were compromised between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15 by malware installed on the company's point of sale registers.

Steinhafel said Target's first priority was to remove the malware, which was accomplished by that Sunday evening.
"We were very confident that coming into Monday [Dec. 16], guests could come to Target and shop with confidence with no risk."

But this past Friday, Target said its investigation found that at least 70 million customers' personal information was stolen from its database -- including names, mailing addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses. Some victims didn't shop at Target during the time of the breach, said the retailer, which expects some overlap in the two data sets but doesn't have the exact numbers yet.

Steinhafel said he's aware of the anger felt by his customers because he's been getting an unvarnished view of the outcry. "No one screens my email. So I have read every single email that has come to me."

He said the emails "run the gamut of emotions" from support of the way the retailer has handled the situation, to what he described as some "fairly poorly chosen words to describe Target and myself."

Target also announced Friday that it lowered its fourth-quarter profit forecast, in part due to weaker-than-expected sales since reports of the cyber-attack emerged. Steinhafel said that shopping trends as of Friday were nearly back to normal.

"We have to do everything possible to make it right by every guest and earn that trust back," Steinhafel vowed.
